It was a far cry from her iconic Pretty Woman days as Julia Roberts appeared on set with Ewan McGregor, filming the drama August: Osage County in Bartlesville, Oklahoma.
The 44-year-old actress, known for her glamorous roles, looked dramatically different as she took on the part of Barbara Weston—a woman grappling with family turmoil in the wake of her father’s disappearance. Dressed in plain, layered clothing and with no makeup, Roberts embodied the emotional weight of her character.
Filming on Thursday, Roberts was seen wearing a white button-down over a cream top, paired with loose-fitting jeans. Her typically styled brunette hair was left unkempt, in line with her character’s understated, worn-down appearance.
In a particularly intense scene, McGregor’s character, Bill Fordham, walks hand-in-hand with Barbara to a boat dock, where they’re asked to identify a dead body by the local sheriff. As the reality hits, Roberts bursts into tears, collapsing into McGregor’s arms in a heartbreaking moment.
Despite the heavy storyline, the mood lightened between takes. Roberts was spotted laughing with co-star Julianne Nicholson, who seemed to point out something amusing to the group.
Nicholson, known for Boardwalk Empire, also embraced the film’s stripped-down aesthetic, sporting a blue shirt and brown flared pants with her hair tied back.
The all-star cast of the 2013 film also includes Meryl Streep as Violet Weston and Benedict Cumberbatch as “Little” Charles Aiken. Interestingly, the role of Karen Weston was originally given to Andrea Riseborough, who had to drop out due to scheduling conflicts. Juliette Lewis stepped in as her replacement. Additionally, Chloë Moretz auditioned for the role of Jean Fordham, but the part ultimately went to Abigail Breslin.
