Authorities in British Columbia have recovered the bodies of three men following a devastating mudslide near the town of Lillooet. A fourth man remains missing, according to the Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP).
The first body was found on Wednesday, and two more were recovered on Thursday, B.C. Chief Coroner Lisa Lapointe confirmed in a statement released Saturday. Search teams continued efforts on Friday to locate the fourth missing man but were unsuccessful.
Earlier in the week, on Monday, the body of a woman was also discovered at the site, marking the first confirmed death from a series of mudslides and flooding that struck southern British Columbia after a weekend of record-setting rainfall.
With no additional leads, the search has now been called off, though officials are still discussing possible next steps, Lapointe said.
Efforts are underway to identify the three men and notify their families. In total, four people are believed to be missing following the mudslide that occurred on Highway 99, south of Lillooet. One death had already been confirmed before the most recent recoveries.
