A tragic Air India plane crash has claimed the lives of 279 people, including nearly everyone onboard and several on the ground. Out of the 242 passengers and crew members, just one person survived: 40-year-old British citizen Vishwash Kumar Ramesh.
Officials say the toll could have been even worse if not for the heroic actions of Captain Sumeet Sabharwal, who, in his final moments, managed to steer the failing aircraft away from a nearby hospital housing more than 3,000 patients.
Ramesh, who walked away with only minor injuries, recalled his escape: “My seat and the door were broken. I saw an opening and just got out.” Video of him after the crash—appearing calm and virtually unscathed—has sparked skepticism in some corners of the internet. But most people see it as an extraordinary stroke of luck.
Tragically, Ramesh’s brother, who was also on the flight, did not survive. Ramesh is currently recovering in the hospital, where he was visited by Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The extreme heat of the crash—reaching up to 2,700°F—has made it difficult for authorities to identify the remains. Teams are now working around the clock using DNA testing to help bring closure to the victims’ families.
Though questions remain about Ramesh’s survival, many see it as a rare moment of hope in an otherwise heartbreaking disaster.
