Nobody believed him when he explained his morning ritual with an unusual friend, so they recorded it.

Toddlers often make quirky choices when it comes to friends—some even invent imaginary ones. But for one little boy in the Canary Islands, his best buddy is real—and happens to be a giant manta ray.

Captured on video at a local wharf, the sweet moment shows the boy feeding and petting the massive sea creature as if they’ve known each other forever. The ray glides right up to the stone steps, gently accepting treats from the child’s hand and even lingering for some affection.

This isn’t unusual here. Fishermen regularly toss fish scraps into the water, attracting all kinds of marine life, including the rays that have learned this spot is a good place for a free meal.

But the connection between this boy and the manta ray goes beyond food. The animal’s calm, almost affectionate behavior reflects what scientists already know: manta rays are intelligent, curious, and surprisingly friendly toward humans.

Despite their enormous size—some reach over 20 feet across—manta rays are peaceful creatures. They rarely pose a threat and will only react defensively if provoked.

In a world full of unlikely friendships, this one between a young boy and a gentle giant of the sea might just be the most heartwarming of all.
