Pete Burns, lead singer of the 1980s British pop band Dead or Alive, has passed away at age 57 following a sudden heart attack. Best known for the hit song “You Spin Me Round (Like a Record),” Burns shot to fame in 1985 and was preparing to release a new box set, Sophisticated Boom Box MMXVI, on October 28.
His management team remembered him as a “true visionary” and a “one-of-a-kind star.” In later years, Burns became a familiar face on reality TV and drew attention for his dramatic transformation through plastic surgery. Known for his dark humor, he once joked, “I hope when I get to heaven, God doesn’t recognize me.”
Burns said his interest in cosmetic surgery began after his rise to fame made him hyper-aware of his appearance. It started with a nose job, but he was unhappy with the result. That led to nearly 300 cosmetic procedures over the years, including cheek implants and lip enhancements. “I see myself as my own clay,” he explained in a 2010 interview.
The surgeries took a serious toll on his health. Complications led to infections, blood clots, and multiple corrective surgeries. One botched lip procedure nearly killed him, and the blood thinners used afterward caused his teeth to fall out, requiring a complete dental rebuild.
Despite the medical setbacks, Burns remained unapologetic about his choices. “What you see on the outside is a complete contradiction to what’s on the inside,” he once said, insisting he had no plans to stop altering his appearance.
