Martin Mull, the beloved comedian, actor, and musician, has died at the age of 80, his family announced.
His daughter, writer and producer Maggie Mull, shared the news on Instagram, revealing that he passed away at home after โa valiant fight against a long illness.โ
โHe was known for being brilliant at just about every creative pursuitโand also for doing Red Roof Inn commercials,โ she joked. โThat would have made him laugh. He was always funny.โ
Maggie added, โHeโll be deeply missed by his friends, colleagues, fellow artists, comedians, musicians, andโmost importantlyโmany, many dogs. His wife and I loved him so much.โ
Martin Mull had a long and eclectic career, best known to many for his roles as the quirky Principal Willard Kraft on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, and Leon Carp, Roseanne Connerโs friend and coworker, on Roseanne.
He also made a memorable appearance as Gene Parmesan, the bumbling private investigator on Arrested Development, and earned his first Emmy nomination in 2016 for his role as Bob Bradley on Veep.
But Mullโs talents stretched far beyond television. In the 1980s, he co-wrote The History of White People in America, a satirical mockumentary, with longtime collaborator Fred Willard.
He was also a gifted musician and songwriter. In the early โ70s, country singer Jane Morgan recorded his parody track โA Girl Named Johnny Cash,โ a playful twist on the Johnny Cash hit โA Boy Named Sue.โ The song stayed on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart for five weeks.
Mull regularly performed in nightclubs, singing funny original songs and playing guitar. Over the years, he opened for music legends like Frank Zappa, Bruce Springsteen, Randy Newman, and Billy Joel.
While often labeled a humorist, critics pointed out that Mullโs albums were more than just comedy. As AllMusic once wrote, โMullโs offbeat sense of humor is obvious in his music, but heโs not a parody artist like Weird Al. His records blend singer-songwriter, pop/rock, and jazz with witty lyrics.โ
Melissa Joan Hart, who starred as Sabrina on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, paid tribute to Mull, remembering his role as the well-meaning but often clueless principal.
Martin Mullโs creative legacy is wide-reaching, and his distinctive humor will continue to resonate with fans and fellow artists alike.
