Four-year-old Maverick Flinn, a cheerful little boy with a big love for toy tractors and farm life, was tragically killed in a farming accident on June 23 in southern Indiana. His great-grandmother, 68-year-old Nancy Ann “Nanny” Fox, also lost her life in the same heartbreaking incident.
Maverick had simply wanted to ride along in the combine with his great-grandfather—a favorite activity on the family farm. But after dismounting, an accident involving a tractor took both his and Nancy’s lives, leaving their tight-knit family in shock and grief.
In the aftermath, the town of Seymour showed up in full force to support the Flinn family. Local farmers harvested two weeks’ worth of wheat in just one day, and a GoFundMe campaign to build a memorial playground in Maverick’s name quickly raised over $70,000.
Maverick is being remembered as a joyful, adventurous boy who loved being outdoors, racing monster trucks, visiting fire stations with his dad, and bringing joy everywhere he went.
Nancy Fox, lovingly known as “Nanny,” was a pillar of the family—a devoted wife and proud farm matriarch who found joy in simple moments on the land and porch with loved ones.
The Flinns, a family deeply involved in public service—Maverick’s dad and grandfather are both firefighters—have launched a safety initiative called the “Maverick Minute.” It encourages farmers to pause for 60 seconds before operating machinery to prevent future tragedies.
“We’re going to keep going in his honor,” Maverick’s uncle said. “And we’re going to make sure something like this never happens again.”
