A Virginia family’s trip home from an elite ice skating camp ended in tragedy when American Airlines Flight 5342 collided with a U.S. Army helicopter, killing all 67 on board.
Donna Livingston, her husband Peter, and daughters Everly (14) and Alydia (11) had just shared joyful photos from their seats moments before takeoff—smiling faces that now haunt those who loved them.
Donna’s friend Jin Ah Longerbeam remembered the girls as “my little babies,” while her son Wolfe, who trained with them, anxiously waited at the airport, clinging to hope. “He kept saying, ‘They’re gonna be cold. We have to make sure they’re warm,’” she said through tears.
Peter, known for building a backyard ice rink during lockdown, was described as a deeply devoted father.
So far, 41 victims have been recovered and 28 identified. Investigators suspect possible Army helicopter pilot error but the cause remains under review.
The crash has devastated a tight-knit community, who now hold onto the final images of a loving family lost too soon.
