Tamayo Perry, 49, was more than a lifeguard and surf instructor—he was a beloved waterman and actor known for roles in Pirates of the Caribbean and Blue Crush. Tragically, he died Sunday in a suspected shark attack off Oahu’s North Shore.
For eight years, Tamayo served with Honolulu Ocean Safety, earning deep respect for his bravery and dedication. Mayor Rick Blangiardi called him a true hero who gave his life protecting others.
Found near Goat Island with fatal injuries on June 23, Tamayo was remembered by Acting Chief Kurt Lager as “a lifeguard loved by all.” Born and raised on Oahu’s east side, he was a Pipeline expert and ran a surf school with his wife. Surfers and friends, including Kelly Slater, mourned his loss, saying he “lived the life he loved.”
Our hearts go out to Tamayo’s family and friends. May he rest in peace.
