A heartbreaking accident early Sunday morning, July 16, on highway CE-060 between Caririaçu and Juazeiro do Norte, has left the Cariri region in mourning.
The crash claimed the lives of an entire family: three-year-old Miguel Nascimento Gomes, Sebastião Cícero Gomes, and Hérida Nascimento da Silva. The devastating loss is a stark reminder of life’s fragility and how suddenly tragedy can strike.
According to the Ceará Military Fire Department, as reported by TV Verdes Mares, the family had been traveling from the town of Várzea Alegre to Juazeiro do Norte—a trip that normally takes about an hour.
They were on their way to a surgery appointment for young Miguel, adding another layer of sorrow to the tragedy. What was meant to be a hopeful journey toward healing ended in unimaginable loss.
Around 7 a.m., their vehicle veered off the road and plunged into a stream near the rural area of Sítio Piripiri. The water, nearly 16 feet deep, made rescue efforts extremely difficult and ultimately unsuccessful.
Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash, which has raised serious concerns about road safety and infrastructure conditions along this stretch of highway.
