A heartbreaking accident has left the community of Sidrolândia, a rural town in Brazil’s Mato Grosso do Sul state, in deep mourning. Relatives, friends, and local residents gathered to say their final goodbyes to 30-year-old Drielle Leite Lopes and her three young children—10-year-old Helena, 2-year-old João Lúcio, and 3-month-old José Augusto.
The family was killed in a devastating crash on BR-060, a major highway connecting Sidrolândia and the state capital, Campo Grande. The tragedy occurred Sunday night after the family had visited Drielle’s mother to share joyful news: they had just purchased their first home.
The emotional wake was held at the Sidrolândia City Council, where grief and outrage filled the room. Mourners described a profound sense of shock as the entire community grappled with the sudden loss of four lives from one family.
According to investigators from the State Public Prosecutor’s Office, the crash happened when the driver of a Chevrolet Corsa tried to pass a truck but misjudged the move. The car sideswiped the truck and then collided head-on with a Volkswagen Saveiro carrying Drielle and her children.
The incident has sparked outrage and sorrow across the region, with many calling for increased safety measures on the notoriously dangerous highway.
