Italian film legend Sophia Loren turns 90

Sophia Loren, one of the most iconic figures in international cinema, has turned 90. The Italian-born actress, who rose to fame in the 1950s and captivated audiences worldwide through the ’60s and beyond, remains a symbol of beauty, elegance, and talent. From comedy to drama, Loren’s performances left a lasting imprint on film history.

President Sergio Mattarella marked the occasion by praising her legacy: “Her elegance, charm, and unforgettable acting have shaped the history of both Italian and international cinema. She remains a symbol of Italian beauty and art around the world.”

Loren began her career as a teenager in beauty pageants, landing her first film role at 16. That same year, she met film producer Carlo Ponti, who later became her husband and lifelong collaborator.

Though she now rarely appears in public, Loren recently made a special appearance at her grandson’s restaurant. Dressed in white with a statement necklace, she was helped on and off stage—fragile, yet still radiating the grace that made her a legend.
