Joe Biden breaks silence on his cancer diagnosis

Former President Joe Biden has been diagnosed with an aggressive form of prostate cancer, according to a statement released by his office on May 18. The 82-year-old was found to have stage 9 prostate cancer that has spread to his bones.

“President Biden was evaluated last week after experiencing worsening urinary symptoms,” the statement read. “He was diagnosed on Friday with metastatic prostate cancer, with a Gleason score of 9 (Grade Group 5).” While the diagnosis is serious, doctors say the cancer appears to be hormone-sensitive, which could make it more responsive to treatment. Biden and his family are currently reviewing treatment options with his medical team.

This difficult news comes at a time when Biden’s health has been under intense public scrutiny. He had already faced questions about his fitness for office, especially during his short-lived 2024 re-election campaign. After a rocky debate performance against Donald Trump and growing concerns about his health, Biden withdrew from the race just three months before Election Day, passing the Democratic nomination to Vice President Kamala Harris.

The White House previously pushed back against speculation that Biden was suffering from Alzheimer’s, following his debate showing. Now, in light of his cancer diagnosis, Biden’s political rival Donald Trump offered an unusually respectful message.

Trump posted on Truth Social:
“Melania and I are saddened to hear about Joe Biden’s recent diagnosis. We wish him a full and speedy recovery, and send our heartfelt thoughts to Jill and the entire Biden family.”

Vice President Kamala Harris, now leading the Democratic ticket, also shared her support.
“Doug and I are deeply sorry to hear about President Biden’s cancer diagnosis. We are praying for him, Dr. Biden, and their family. Joe is a fighter, and I know he’ll face this battle with the same courage and determination that has always defined his life and leadership.”

Biden is no stranger to cancer battles. In 2023, he had surgery to remove a malignant tumor, and he was treated for skin cancer before becoming president. His commitment to cancer research has remained strong, especially following the death of his son Beau in 2015 from brain cancer.

As Biden and his family face this new challenge, messages of support are pouring in from across the political spectrum.
