A California firefighter captured hearts across the country after being photographed comforting a young girl at the scene of a devastating car accident near San Diego.
According to local station KNSD, the crash occurred when a big rig crossed into oncoming traffic on a highway, colliding with several vehicles. One of those cars was carrying a mother, her two daughters—ages 4 and 6—and another adult relative.
While paramedics rushed to treat the mother and the 6-year-old, who had a broken neck and difficulty breathing, firefighter-paramedic Ryan Lopez from Heartland Fire & Rescue turned his attention to the uninjured 4-year-old.
In a moment caught on video, Lopez is seen gently holding the girl, rocking her side to side in a calming rhythm. Later, he walked her to a fire truck, gave her some water, and held her close as she rested her head on his shoulder.
Lopez, who is also a father, told KNSD, “She just wanted to hang on and feel safe.”
The younger daughter and her mother were later treated for minor injuries, while the older daughter was taken to a local children’s hospital due to the seriousness of her condition. Her mom was able to ride along in the ambulance.
The video quickly made the rounds online, drawing an outpouring of emotional responses. Hundreds of viewers flooded Newsiosity’s Facebook page with praise for Lopez’s empathy and calm presence.
“Praying all will be ok,” one commenter wrote. “God bless the fireman for his kindness. God bless all.”
Another added, “He said it was just a normal reaction because he’s a dad. That’s being humble on top of being a hero.”
Despite the widespread attention, Lopez remained modest: “It’s not something I would ever seek recognition for. I know anyone in my position would’ve done the same.”
