Two people lost their lives in a mid-air collision involving a Cessna 172S and a Lancair 360 MK II near Marana Regional Airport, located northwest of Tucson, Arizona. The crash occurred around 8:30 a.m.
One of the planes went down near the runway and caught fire, while the other was able to land safely. The two people aboard the surviving aircraft were unharmed.
The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has confirmed the fatalities and launched an investigation into the crash. In response, Marana Regional Airport—an uncontrolled airfield without a control tower—has been temporarily shut down.
Local authorities have extended their sympathies to the victims’ families and commended emergency responders for their swift action at the scene.
The airport is part of the FAA’s Air Traffic Control Tower Program, a designation that could lead to future safety improvements.
