A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) has made it clear that anyone—no matter their job or status—could face legal trouble, including arrest, if they try to interfere with federal immigration enforcement efforts.
The warning came during a national news interview following a recent incident where someone tried to get into a federal immigration facility without permission. DHS said actions like that could be considered trespassing or obstruction, especially if the person refuses to follow instructions or gets physical with law enforcement.
The spotlight turned to the issue after a public official was reportedly detained outside an immigration detention center during a confrontation with officers. Federal authorities say the person ignored several warnings and tried to enter a restricted area, which led to their detention.
Officials stressed that while immigration facilities can be toured, it needs to be arranged ahead of time through official channels. They also underscored the importance of keeping both officers and visitors safe during any interactions.
